Madhurendra Kumar (born 5 September 1994) is an Indian sand sculptor, environmental artist, and social awareness campaigner from Bihar, India. He is known for creating large-scale sand sculptures addressing environmental conservation, climate change, public health, spirituality, Indian culture, and humanitarian themes. Kumar has participated in national and international sand sculpture festivals and has represented India in multiple countries across Asia, Europe, and North America.

He is also known for his work in leaf carving, fruit carving, and public installation art using eco-friendly materials.

Early life

Madhurendra Kumar was born in the East Champaran district of the Indian state of Bihar into a financially disadvantaged agricultural family. His father, Shiv Kumar Sah, worked as a farmer, while his mother, Gena Devi, managed the household.

His childhood was marked by economic hardship. According to biographical accounts, he supported his family through various forms of labour including cattle grazing, selling dairy products, bamboo weaving, vegetable vending, hotel work, signboard painting, and survey-related employment.

Kumar developed an interest in art during early childhood and frequently used mud, clay, and river sand to create figures and shapes near riverbanks in his village.

Education

Kumar completed his early education in Bihar under difficult financial circumstances. He later studied fine arts at Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, where he completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies in sculpture.

During his student years, financial constraints reportedly forced him to spend several months sleeping in college corridors because he could not afford hostel accommodation.

Career

Early artistic development

Kumar began experimenting with sand sculpture as an alternative artistic medium because he lacked access to conventional art supplies such as paint and canvas. He started creating temporary sculptures along riverbanks in Bihar.

His work received wider recognition in 2012 after former President of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam publicly appreciated his artistic talent. Kumar later described this recognition as a turning point in his career.
