Dr. Arun Kumar S Haripad (born 30 May 1980), better known by his literary pseudonym Ezhuthalan, is an Indian poet, author, lyricist, educator and social reformer from Kerala. His writings, produced in both Malayalam and English, explore themes of social justice, human dignity, moral responsibility and cultural rootedness.
He is presently employed as an English faculty member under the Vocational Higher Secondary Education Department of the Government of Kerala and is actively associated with multiple literary, cultural and social organisations.
Early life and education
Dr. Arun Kumar S was born and raised in Haripad, located in the Alappuzha district of Kerala. Growing up in a family that valued education and ethical thought, he developed a strong inclination towards literature and social awareness at a young age.
His father, V. N. Sivasankara Pillai, and his mother, Dr. L. Jayasree, a former academician, significantly influenced his intellectual and moral development.
He completed his postgraduate studies in English literature and later obtained a Bachelor of Education degree from the Teacher Education Centre, Kayamkulam. After qualifying the State Eligibility Test (SET), he pursued doctoral research and earned a PhD in English. In addition, he holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from Annamalai University.
Professional life
Literary contributions
Dr. Arun Kumar S Haripad entered the literary sphere in the early 2000s. His first Malayalam poetry collection, Sudarshanam, drew attention for its socially reflective themes and established his presence in modern Malayalam poetry.
His later work, Novu, was officially launched in Thiruvananthapuram by Kerala’s Education Minister V. Sivankutty. The proceeds from the publication were contributed towards relief efforts for victims of the Wayanad landslides.
His English poetry anthology, Truth, Goodness and Beauty Behind Love, was released by Kerala’s Agriculture Minister P. Prasad at a public gathering in Haripad.
Other literary works authored by him include Good Vision, Porali, Ezhuthalan, and Atmayanathinte Kavita, the latter of which was later transformed into an audio poetry album.
Songwriting and devotional works
In addition to poetry, Dr. Arun has made notable contributions as a lyricist, particularly in devotional music. His devotional albums include Ambalapuzha Kannan, Mannarisala Stuti Geetangal, Nenjile Novu, and Munpe Nadannavar, reflecting a synthesis of spiritual devotion and poetic artistry.
Teaching and public discourse
As an educator, Dr. Arun is recognised for integrating literature, ethics and social awareness into his teaching methodology. He is a regular speaker at literary meets, academic conferences and cultural forums throughout Kerala.
He currently holds leadership roles as President of Ee Yugam Literary and Cultural Association, Editor of Darppanam Magazine, and President of both Uvakalasahiti and IPTA Haripad.
