Madhurendra Kumar was born in Barwakala village in East Champaran district, Bihar. He was born into a financially disadvantaged farming family.

His father, Shiv Kumar Sah, worked as a farmer, while his mother Gena Devi was a homemaker.

During childhood, Kumar experienced financial hardship and helped support his family through manual labor while continuing his education. His artistic interest developed at an early age, when he began drawing on the ground and experimenting with clay and sand found near riverbanks.

He completed his schooling in Bihar and later enrolled at Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi, where he earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Sculpture.
