Sujay Rao Mandavilli (born 18 November 1969) is an Indian anthropologist, independent researcher, and founder of the Institute for the Study of the Globalisation of Science (ISGOS). His academic and intellectual work spans globalization of science, sociology of knowledge, identity theory, historiography, and reform of education systems in the twenty-first century.
He is associated with the Globalisation of Science Trust and has published extensively in interdisciplinary social science research.
Early life
Mandavilli was born in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He spent his formative years in Coimbatore and Chennai, and briefly resided in West Germany during 1978–79, where he attended a German-medium school.
He completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya and later at Vanavani Matriculation Higher Secondary School situated inside the IIT Madras campus. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree in 1990.
Higher education and qualifications
Mandavilli obtained a Master of Arts in Anthropology from Indira Gandhi National Open University in 2020, specializing in ethnography and environmental anthropology. He also holds postgraduate qualifications in commerce and business administration (M.Com and PGDBA).
He completed CA Inter from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and acquired professional certifications in ISO 27001 auditing, Six Sigma (Master Black Belt), ITIL, CEH, and related governance and compliance frameworks.
Corporate career
Mandavilli began his professional journey in the field of auditing before transitioning into information technology in 1998. He worked in software development, systems implementation, and project management, including assignments in Bhutan and Southeast Asia.
Between 2005 and 2011, he was associated with IBM, where he served as Business Controls Head for the India GBS-GD division. His responsibilities included governance, risk management, compliance oversight, and internal control frameworks.
After leaving IBM, he worked as an independent Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) consultant for corporate organizations in India and abroad.

Personal life
Mandavilli married Tara Mandavilli in 1996, and the marriage ended in divorce in 2015. He has one son. He has publicly stated that he dedicates his time primarily to research and intellectual pursuits. He is a non-smoker and teetotaler.
